About This Video
Unganji is a Zen temple located in the mountains near Otawara City in Tochigi prefecture. Part of the Rinzai School, it was built around the Heian era during the Daiji years (1126 ~ 1131).
While often ignored by travelers, Unganji offers you a breathtaking zen experience thanks to its gorgeous approach and two-story main gate. The temple is one of Japan’s four major temples for zen practices. It also was described by the famous Japanese poet Basho Matsuo (1644 ~ 1694) in one of his haiku after a visit there.
