Shisen-do is a Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen. Located in Kyoto’s less traveled Higashiyama district, Shisen-do is famous for its quiet atmosphere and gorgeous autumn leaves. Shisen-do was built in 1641 as a retirement villa by Ishikawa Johanna. He was a samurai, Chinese classics scholar, and landscape architect. Besides its peaceful garden, Shisen-do is also known for its unique collection of 36 portraits of ancient Chinese poets.
