Sasuke Inari Shrine - Kanagawa

Discover Sasuke Inari Shrine (佐助稲荷神社), a hidden Shinto shrine tucked away in the peaceful hills of Kamakura, Japan.

Surrounded by lush forest, rows of vivid red torii gates lead up the hillside to this atmospheric shrine, where countless fox statues and figures can be found throughout the grounds. Foxes are closely associated with Inari, one of Japan’s most widely worshipped Shinto deities.

According to local tradition, Sasuke Inari Shrine is connected to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate. While exiled in Izu, Yoritomo is said to have received a message in a dream from the “Inari of the Hidden Village of Kamakura,” encouraging him to take action. He later established the shrine in gratitude.

Away from Kamakura’s busiest temples and streets, Sasuke Inari has a very different atmosphere — quiet, mysterious, and almost hidden within the forest.

Walk through the torii gates, explore the fox-filled shrine grounds, and experience another peaceful side of Kamakura and Japan.
