About This Video
Nanzen-Ji temple is the main temple located near Tenju-An (Kyoto). It is the head temple of a school within the Rinzai sect. Destroyed during the civil wars of the late Muromachi Period (1333-1573), the history of Nanzen-ji temple dates back to the middle of the 13th century when the Emperor Kameyama built his retirement house and later converted it into a zen temple.
With many rock Zen gardens, Nazen-Ji and Tenju-an are also famous for their gorgeous Sanmon gate erected in 1628, built-in memory of soldiers that died in the 1615 Siege of Osaka Castle.
