Located on the top of Mt Kurama north of Kyoto you will find the famous Kurama-dera temple. The story goes that around the year 772, a Chinese Monk named Jianzhen saw in one of his dreams that Mt Kurama had strong spiritual powers. He decided to build an esoteric temple to concentrate the power of Mt Kurama in a single place which is now known as Kurama-dera temple.

Kurama-dera’s initial worshippers were of the Tendai order of Buddhism. The temple is guarded by three statues. Bishamonten, protector of the north, the Thousand-Armed Kannon, and a third statue, the Defender Lord, representing power. all three statues create a trinity called the “Sonten”.
