About This Video
Located in the center of Seiyo, in the Unomachi Uwa district, the Kaimei school was built in 1882 and is considered to be the oldest school in the whole Shikoku island. Thanks to its rare Giyōfū architecture style, which heavily resembles western style construction but used traditional Japanese building construction techniques, the Kaimei school was designated in 1997 as one of the important cultural properties in Japan. Now turned into a museum, the Kaimei school gives you not only the chance to find out what kids learned at school more than a century ago but the school turned museum, features over 6,000 stored and displayed precious documents and school textbooks from the Edo through early Showa periods.
