About This Video
Completed in 1622 after more than 20 years of intense labor, Hikone Castle, a hilltop castle, survived many wars and calamities is one of Japan’s very few original castles entirely build in wood, unlike Osaka and Aichi Castle for example.
Hikone Castle’s beautiful three-storied keep features a unique design that combines multiple different architecture styles, explaining why the castle keep has been designated as one of Japan’s national treasures, a distinction only held as of today by four other castle keeps including Himeji-jo, Matsumoto-jo, Inuyama-jo and finally Matsue-jo.
