Haguro-san Five-Story Pagoda

Mount Haguro is one of the sacred Three Mountains of Dewa. Near the beginning of the long stone approach stands its five-story pagoda, the oldest surviving pagoda in the Tohoku region.

The current structure dates to 1372 and was built in a traditional wooden style without nails or metal fasteners. Snow gives the surrounding cedar forest an especially quiet winter atmosphere.
