Fukagawa city is located on the east side of Tokyo in the Koto ward. It was founded after the Great Fire of Meireki of 1657 and named after its founder Fukagawa Hachirozaemon. The shogunate ordered Buddhist temples on the east bank of the Sumida river, and on both the north and west banks of the Onagi River, to be relocated.
Each year, during the Sakura season, Fukagawa holds a unique Sakura Matsuri along its many rivers when people all across Tokyo enjoy a nice stroll under thousands of cherry trees or enjoy a nice, scenic boat ride surrounded by beautiful fluffy pink Sakura.
