About This Video
Located near Wakayama City, Awashima Jinja is a Japanese shrine-like no other. It’s known as the Memorial dolls shrine. Being first and foremost a shrine dedicated to women and where women come to pray for fertility and other health-related matters, Awashima Jinja is also famous for being the resting place of countless traditional Hina dolls and other figures. Indeed, many people in Japan believe that dolls such as Hina dolls have souls and instead of throwing them away when these dolls are getting too old or when people outgrown them, many Japanese come to offer them to the shrine where each doll will be purified, blessed and either kept, burnt or thrown to the sea during a unique ceremony that takes place every year during the Hinamatsuri (3rd of March).
