Believed to have been established during the reign of the Emperor Keiko (71-130), the Atsuta Jingu, also known as Atsuta-Sama or simply as Miya, has been officially designated as one of the Kanpei-Taisha (imperial shrines), like the Great Shrine of Ise.
Atsuta shrine is dedicated to the veneration of Atsuta-no-Ōkami. Also enshrined are the “Five Great Gods of Atsuta”, all of whom are connected with the legendary narratives of the sacred sword.
