If you like skiing, you can take one of these trains. The Hokuriku Shinkansen will take you north, through the mountains and straight to a few ski stations easily accessible from Tokyo. Karuizawa is only one hour away and is perfect for kids and beginners. Enthusiasts can stay on the same train and alight a little bit further in the mountains (75mn from Tokyo), at Gala Yuzawa for instance, where you’ll find much more snow and an easy connection from the train platform to the slopes. This Shinkansen line is perfect for those “one day trips”: you can leave in the morning, enjoy the snow, and come back to Tokyo in the evening, renting everything (from skis to clothes) at the station. As usual with japanese trains, everything is easy and smooth. If you have a JR Rail pass the price is already covered. Enjoying one day in the snow can be an interesting experience if you spend some time in Tokyo in winter !
