When you’ll go to Hakone, don’t forget to visit Owakudani. The place is located in an active volcanic zone counting many natural (very) hot springs. The water contains a lot of sulfur and eggs boiled there become black. These “kuro tamago” are boiled at 80°C for one hour, then steamed 15mn at 100°C. It is said by locals that eating those black eggs will make you live longer… who knows. Anyway if the outside looks weird, the inside is an absolutely normal-looking hen egg, deliciously tasty.
