Summer around Tokyo means Awa Odori. If you plan to visit Japan this summer, the three main Awa Odori festivals around Tokyo are those in Kagurazaka, Koenji (the biggest), and Mitaka. I tend to prefer the last one, held at the end of August for one simple reason: the dancers are as good as in the others, and it is far less crowded. Koenji on the other hand is the biggest, the most spectacular… but finding a good place here requires a real miracle.
